ATSC 3.0 – Connecting the all IP System Together to Ensure Service Delivery

Tom Barbeau, VP of Engineering, Hitachi Kokusai Electric Comark LLC

The transition from ATSC 1.0 to NEXTGEN TV is here.  Delivery of an MPEG-2 Transport Stream via ASI, SMPTE310 SSI, or even via TSoIP is becoming obsolete with the introduction of ATSC 3.0 delivery via RTP/UDP/IP multicast.  The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how multicast transmission is different from the TCP unicast system we currently use for TS delivery in ATSC 1.0 and to explain what the ATSC 3.0 specifications require.  Standard A/324, “Scheduler/Studio to Transmitter Link” defines how RTP/UDP/IP multicast will be used to implement the various links in ATSC 3.0.  The presentation will address many questions including:  How are the links impacted by the requirements of the various Internet protocols governing multicast usage?  What multicast address or address ranges do we need to avoid and why?  How can we secure our STLTP and guarantee delivery?  What mechanisms or services exist to do this? Is there a hierarchy of protection schemes? Can we implement this as part of a Quality of Service System?

Luncheon meetings are open only to AFCCE members and their guests.  There is no cost for this virtual meeting and AFCCE hopes you can attend during your lunch hour.  AFCCE Members may register to attend the luncheon meeting below.  All times are Eastern.
