May 10th Luncheon Meeting

RF Exposure Compliance Assessment Modeling and an International Effort to Improve Spatial Averaging Methodology

Dr. Danie Ludick
IXUS
A presentation on the current state of the art in modeling antennas to determine RF exposure levels in the vicinity of radio base stations. This covers legacy antenna systems as well as multi-beam implementations used by 5G New Radio (NR) base stations. Techniques include ray tracing, full wave modeling, and aperture antenna methods described in IEEE and IEC publications. Developments related to spatial averaging exposure assessment methods will be discussed. This work is from ongoing research spearheaded by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA).

Danie was born in South Africa, on July 30, 1985. He received a BEng degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering with additional computer science subjects (cum laude) and an MEng degree (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, in 2007 and 2009, respectively. In 2014 he obtained a PhD, also from Stellenbosch University, while working full-time as a Senior Software Engineer for the well-known computational electromagnetic software suite, FEKO. His research was based on the accurate and fast simulation of large antenna arrays. From 2017 to 2020 he worked as a Lecturer at the Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Stellenbosch University. In 2020 Danie joined the team from Alphawave Mobile Network Products (Pty) Ltd, a South African based firm that pioneered the industry-leading EMF compliance toolset called IXUS (https://ixusapp.com/).

In addition to his role as CEO of IXUS, he is currently still involved in academic research and has authored numerous international journal and conference articles, primarily published via the IEEE where he is also a member. The research is focussed on efficient and fast electromagnetic simulation and EMF Safety.
