Evaluating Service Availability for ATSC 3.0 Single Frequency Networks

The ATSC 3.0 standard will permit broadcasters to offer many new services to devices not traditionally considered when designing a transmitter site. This new standard also allows for the delivery of more uniform service over a desired coverage area by operating additional transmitters in a Single Frequency Network (SFN). Evaluating the available Field Strength at a given receive location is no longer sufficient to predict if service will be available. This presentation discusses a presentation format that combines Field Strength, self-interference, receiver type and other critical ATSC 3.0/SFN parameters in a single plot for ease of presentation and interpretation, using Progira network Planning software. Examples with reception problems and their improved versions will be investigated.
